Investigations revealed that Anand Swarups nephew Ram Gobind had earlier come from Kanpur and found a job as casual labour in the same factory where his uncle worked. But a few months back he left the job and returned to Kanpur to pursue his BA.
A police team visited Kanpur and interrogated Ram Gobind who confessed of committing the crime abetted and aided by his maternal uncle Dinesh Kumar Misra. Apparently, Misra had given Gobind the incentive of becoming the sole owner of Swarup's property, being his nearest descendent. This is said to be the motive behind the murder.
In his confession before the police, Ram Gobind admitted of stealing chloroform from his college lab and procuring a sharp-edged weapon which has also been recovered by the police.

On the night of March 20, Gobind and Misra reached Swarup's house. When the Swarups went off to sleep after having dinner, the culprits used chloroform to make all four members of the family unconscious after which they slit their throats.
SSP, Alok Mittal, while briefing the press said that Gobind has been arrested and they hope to nab Misra also soon.
